Founded in 1866, Luton Choral Society is a choir of mixed voices, performing classical choral music concerts in Luton and the surrounding area, providing the opportunity for people to sing in a classical choir & for audiences to hear live classical music in their own locality. Our aim is to contribute to the cultural diversity of the Luton area by maintaining the town's longstanding and proud choral tradition- there are many artistic groups in the town, especially rock, pop, theatre & dance, but very few classical music groups.
The choir has about 60 members from mixed backgrounds. We put on three main concerts each year with professional orchestras and soloists, including some special concerts, which in recent years have included
- a performance of African Sanctus. This was a community project, involving Luton Youth Cantores, Someries School Drummers and an art competition, held in the Carnival Arts Centre, and drew a large audience from many communities across the town.
- a joint perfomance with two other choirs of Elgar's Dream of Gerontius in London Please watch the film we made of this concert and what it means to be in the choir here (opens in a new window)
- a joint performance with Luton Youth Cantores of Bach's St Matthew Passion
